Note that each unit inside Saturn is initialized to the state shown in Table 1.1 when the power is turned on.

Table 1.1 Initial state at power ON
 status
 contents
 Sound CPU is off
The sound CPU is reset. The
SNDON command starts the power-on vector
.
VDP1, VDP2, SCU, SCSP ON state
 Accessible from SH-2
 Slave SH OFF state
 Slave SH-2 is reset
. It starts moving from the power-on vector by the SSHON command.
 DOT SEL OFF state
PLL oscillation frequency is 320 mode
(NTSC: 26.8741MHz, PAL: 26.6875MHz)
and VDP1, VDP2 , SH-2 is operating at this frequency. Operates in 352 mode
(NTSC: 28.6364MHz, PAL: 28.4375MHz)
with CKCHG352 command.
 CD block ON status
 Accessible from SH-2
.

■ Function

SMPC has three functions: RTC (Real Time Clock), SM (System Management), and PC (Peripheral Control).
Table 1.2 shows the main functions of SMPC.

Table 1.2 SMPC functions
 RTC
(Real Time Clock)
・ Time setting and acquisition from SH-2
・ Year Automatic update of month, day, hour, minute, second
(Battery backup is possible when main power is off)
 SM
(System Management)
-Sound CPU ON / OFF
-Master SH-2, Slave SH-2 ON / OFF
・ System reset control
・ Clock switching (PLL control)
・ Power ON reset
・ NMI to master S-2 by pressing front panel button Request
 PC
(Peripheral Control)
-Supports peripherals with the Saturn peripheral interface specification
> Automatic collection of peripheral data
for control pads, mice, etc.
-Supports mega drive peripherals (3 buttons, 6 buttons,
