4. Save function

1> Save game record when changing disk

The only way to take over the state of a game across multiple disks is to save the state using a backup RAM, except for special cases such as passwords. Therefore, all multi-disc applications that use the backup RAM must always have a specification for storing game records when changing disks.

1) Auto save

In an application that frequently saves records by auto-save, the record is automatically saved immediately before the disc is replaced.
In addition, in the case of an application that performs auto-save at a certain limited point, the point must be set at the end of play on “Disc 1”.

2) For optional save

Even in the case of an application in which the user arbitrarily saves the record, it is necessary to forcibly save the record immediately before the disk is replaced. This is because if the game is not saved, the game state cannot be taken over, so that it is not possible to proceed to the second and subsequent sheets.

2> When there is no free space in the backup RAM

As shown in the basic design section, the backup RAM must be used in a two-disc set application. In the case of a single-disc application, the user had to be able to play the game at the discretion of the user even when the game was not recorded and there was no free space (the save function could not be used at all). (See separate volume 1: “Criteria for creating backup-compatible software”)
In a two-disc set application, there is no means for starting up “Disc 2” in a game-effective state when there is no record of this game and there is no free space (the save function cannot be used at all). Therefore, the following warning message should be handled before the main game of “Disk 1” starts.

[If you start the game as it is, you can only play halfway. Do you still want to start the game? Yes, No 】

Also, in the case of an application that originally uses the save function for purposes other than the purpose of shifting to the second page, it is necessary to display a message including that the record cannot be saved as follows.

[If you start the game as it is, you will not be able to save the record. Also, you can only play halfway. Do you still want to start the game? Yes, No 】

However, if the halfway play (only the first one) ends in a significantly inappropriate place (if it may be mistaken for a fatal bug), the game will be forced to play with the above message. Should not. In that case, a message prompting to delete the recording of other applications is displayed together with the display of the necessary free space, and the game is not started. (Refer to the separate volume 1: “Standards for creating backup-compatible software” for the message)
